The Mets do suck, but..

The regular season ends today for baseball, and amazingly the Mets will play in the postseason only if they win and the Cincinnati Reds lose. I have to admit that I, and probably every other Mets fan, have never cared what the Reds do, but this year we do.

Anyway, they did something clever in MLB, they both play other opponents, both of whose fate has already been settled, so they don’t really care about the outcome, but in sports being the spoiler counts for something. Not much, but it’s worth trying to win. But the clever thing is that they all start their games at the same time, 4:10PM. So we'll be watching both teams play and we won't know until one of both of the games finish.

So if I remember my stats from college, all things being equal, the Mets have only a 1 in 4 chance of prevailing. But the Mets are a team with philosophy to guide them through moments like this. And for such teams probabilities aren’t deterministic. We remember game 6 of the 1986 World Series. What was the probability that the Metsies would have prevailed then!

But.. if the Mets don't make it, there's always next season and btw the NBA season starts very sooooon, on October 21. 😀
