I love this blog and specifically this post about Good Chaos.
There's a plugin directory on wordpress.org that gets a lot of traffic, but they never change the featured plugins. As a result a few plugins get millions of installs, and most others get far fewer.
The author, Iconick, proposes that they rotate new plugins through the page for a week and see what happens. This isn't a very radical idea, as he points out, it's done by Shopify, Apple and Google, and pretty much everyone else that has a growing, vibrant developer community.
This is the amazing thing about the WordPress world, there is very little evangelism or marketing of developer products.
Evangelism means basically — we created this opportunity, it's new, and we want developers to build stuff here. In return, we will help people find out about the new products.
It's a win-win, we win because we add a new use for the core product, and we encourage independent developers to create in this space, and we will help the users find the good ones.
Evangelism used to be a big thing. Let's make it big again.
