On WNYC just now a segment on an idea for a new primary system in NYC.
One primary, everyone votes. All candidates are there, Repub, Demo, whatever.
The top two vote-getters face off in the election, regardless of what party they come from.
They didn't figure out the major advantage of such an approach.
No more pulling candidates to the extremes, no more "primarying" a candidate, and no more MAGA, even though that isn't an issue in NYC.
I believe they do this in statewide elections in California.
